Cleaning Lamb Skins

If you have any clothing items or home décor items made from lambskin, you may want to know a little about cleaning lamb skins. Lamb skins can be used for many household and clothing items. Some of the more popular uses for lamb skins include gloves, rugs, and coats. Although spilling something on your lambskin items can be frightening, do not worry, they are easy to clean.

057 04a Cleaning Lamb Skins

Suppose you have a lambskin rug that needs clean. Lambskin rugs can be taken to a professional cleaner who specializes in lamb skins, however, for a small spot there is an easier method. The first thing to do is get a gentle detergent. A simple liquid washing detergent for clothing or dishes will work. It is important, however, to make sure there is no bleach in the detergent as this can harm the color of your sheep skin rug.

Next, get a clean rag or sponge wet with hot water and add a little detergent to the rag to get it nice and soapy. Use the soapy rag to scrub the spot that needs cleaned. It is not necessary to scrub too hard, as this can be more harmful than beneficial. Just rub the spot in a soft circular motion until it is clean. If at all possible, try to rub the soiled are of the sheep skin in the same direction as the growth of the hair.

Once the spot is clean, rinse the soapy rag or sponge with hot water until it is clean of all soap and dirt. Then, wet the sponge again. Use the clean water to rinse the soap off of the sheep skin rug. Again, rub gently around the spot and in the same pattern as the hair growth if possible.

Once the spot is rinsed, allow the sheep skin to dry. The best place for this is in a cool area, possibly outside on a dry and cloudy day. Direct heat and sunlight is not recommended for drying your lamb skin, however, it is never a good idea to let it stay wet.

Do not attempt to put your lamb skin in the washing machine. Even the gently cycle can pull and stretch the lamb skin rug and warp the shape. Also, never put the lambskin rug in a clothes dryer. This might shrink your rug. Simply wash the rug by hand with soap and water. This method is also recommended for cleaning lamb skins of any item.

Tips On Cleaning Lamb Skins

Lamb skins are soft, warm, and long lasting, however, there are a few tips on cleaning lamb skins you may want to know. There are numerous items made from lamb skins. Lamb skins can be used for wool sweaters, winter coats, soft rugs and blankets, or warm boots. These items all require special cleaning, however, in order to keep lamb skins in good shape for a long product life.

057 03a Tips On Cleaning Lamb Skins

Lamb skins do not require special cleaning chemicals and you do not have to have them professionally cleaned, unless you want to. In fact, cleaning lamb skins is quite simple. If you have spilled something on your lamb skin item, or maybe have gotten mud on your lamb skin boots, you can easily take care and clean your lamb skins.

The first thing to do is add a little liquid detergent to a clean rag. Make sure the liquid detergent does not have any bleaching agents in it, as this can ruin the color of the lamb skins. A simple laundry detergent or dish washing liquid will suffice.

Next, run the clean rag under warm water to make it thoroughly soapy. Use the warm rag to gently rub on the spill spot. Do not apply too much pressure and do not rub outside of the area of the spill, as this can make the spill spread. Continue to rub in the direction of the hair growth, in a gentle manner, until the spot is completely cleaned.

Once your lamb skin is completely cleaned, allow the lamb skin time to dry. Because wool shrinks, do not dry the lamb skin in direct sunlight or near a heater. Never put your lamb skins in the dryer. Place you lamb skins in a cool and airy spot to dry. If possible, line drying it on a cloudy day would be an ideal method.

There are methods to avoid, however, when cleaning lamb skins. Do not machine wash your lamb skins, as this can cause the material to become out of shape or tear the lamb skins. Also, do not dry clean your lamb skins. The high heat may shrink the lamb skins and the chemical treatment is not good for them.

It is not necessary to have your lamb skins professionally cleaned, unless you have a large stain or prefer to have it professionally cleaned. If you choose to have it done professionally, make sure to find a retailer who specializes in wool and lamb skins. These are a few simple tips on cleaning lamb skins.

Diseases Of Goat Skins

If you are a goat owner, or recently purchased a goat, you will want to know about possible diseases of goat skins. Just like humans, or any wild or domestic animal, goats are susceptible to illness and disease. Diseases which are apparent are often the diseases found on the skin of a goat.

057 02a Diseases Of Goat Skins

If your goat seems to be scratching itself often and on a regular basis, you will want to take a closer look. One possible itchy goat disease is ringworm. Contrary to why you might think, ringworm is not an actual worm. Ringworm is actually a contagious fungus which is common in both humans and animals, and goats get this fungus commonly as well. Ringworm can be easily treated with topical antifungal agents your vet can prescribe, however, there are some signs to look for.

With ringworm, there will be a round lesion on the skin. It can be shaped in a coil or a circle and will be scaly in appearance and red around the edges. Ringworm is contagious to other goats, therefore, make sure to check all of your goats for this condition and treat them with anti fungal agents as well.

Lice is another skin problem for goats. If your goat is itching often, grab a magnifying glass and take a good look at its coat. Lice looks like little brown ovals and they will move very quickly. Do not worry, lice is easy to treat as well. However, lice is very contagious, therefore, treating all of your goats simultaneously and thoroughly cleaning the goats living area is highly recommended. Lice can be treated with over the counter shampoos and powders.

Goats can get a condition caused lumpy wool as well. Lumpy wool goes by many names, however, the symptoms are the same. With lumpy wool, there will be patches of stubble and hair loss on the goat which may be oozing and become crusty or sore. This condition is a fungal condition and is most often caused by damp, cold weather conditions. Lumpy wool can be treated with topical ointments and as always it is best to consult a vet and check all of the other sheep for this fungal condition.

Another common skin condition is mites. Much like lice, mice are very tiny and difficult to see, so you may want to use a magnifying glass. Mites will often live in a cluster on the skin of the goat and, like lice, can easily be treated with powders and shampoos. It is very important to clean the living area of the goats and treat all of your goats simultaneously of mites are found.

These are a few possible things that you might have to treat for you goat. Do not be alarmed, however, as there is no guarantee your goat will ever get any of these skin problems. As always, however, it is recommended to consult a veterinarian if any diseases of goat skins are suspected.

Dying Sheep Skins

If you have a sheep skin rug or clothing made from sheep skin, you may be interested in learning about dying sheep skins. There are many different items made from sheep skin. You may have a sheep skin rug, a sheep skin sweater, or even a sheep skin pair of boots. If you purchased those items in their natural shade of wool, you may be considering dying them a different color.

057 01a Dying Sheep Skins

Wool is a material which is actually very easy to dye a different color. There are also many colors to chose from, when choosing wool dye. You can use bottled dye or powdered dye, however, make sure the dye you choose is specifically suited for wool and leather.

Presoak the item you are dying. Immerse the item completely in water so that the sheep skin absorbs the water. Next, fill a large bucket with hot water. You will need to prepare the dye by mixing it in a separate container with boiling water. If you are using powdered dye, mix two cups of hat water with one packet of powder. If you are using bottled dye, mix two quarts of hot water with each bottle of liquid dye.

Add the prepared dye mixture to the bucket of water. Gently wring some of the excess clean water from the sheep skin and put in the bucket of dye. Make sure the dye completely covers the sheep skin. Using a clean stick or a large wooden spoon, move the sheep skin around the bucket occasionally in order to keep the dye from coming out unevenly colored on the sheep skin.

Allow the sheep skin item to soak for approximately one half of an hour. If you are looking for a lighter shade of the dye color, soak the sheep skin for a shorter amount of time. If you are looking for a stronger shade of dye color, allow the sheep skin to soak for a longer amount of time.

Once the sheep skin has been colored to you preference, allow the sheep skin to dry in a warm place. After it is dry and the colored dye has set in the sheep skin, rinse the sheep skin under running water until the water runs off clean. This can be done in a large sink or tub. Once the water has come off clean, allow the sheep skin to dry again. After it has been fully dry, your project for dying sheep skins is complete.
